Victorian Protest Shoot

So for one of my uni projects I'm doing shoots based around the theme 'The Womens Suffrage Movement' for which I'm doing 3+ shoots. This is the first one I've got round to editing but I am still working on them.

This shoot Is meant to be more historically correct than some of the others I've chosen to do and it is based on the theme of protest.

I am looking for feedback and opinions on these pieces in order to try and improve them where necessary for my final portfolio. I'm currently working on more images from a different shoot under the same theme at the moment and will post a few of those once I'm happy with them!

Solent Rocks

So last week I got asked to shoot Solent Rocks - Battle of the bands, a live music event that takes place in aid of different charities.
It was really my first ever live music event to photograph so I was so nervous the day prior to the event as it's a genre of photography that I'd quite like to get into in the future.

I got to the Venue (The Brook) extra early so I could check out all the bands sound checking and get a feel for the event as I'd never been before.

Here are some of the photos I got from the event;

A list of the performing bands formed from law firms and accountants in the surrounding areas.

The Winning Group.

Considering this was the first time that I'd ever done anything like this and I was left to my own creative devices, I was quite pleased with some of the outcomes I achieved. I also really enjoyed the night as a whole and would recommend to anyone that wants to help out charities to attend next year event.

I hope this will be the first of many live music events I get to photograph as I continue through uni and out the other side as although my arms were in agony after 6 hours of shoots, I loved it!

Some work from a couple of weeks back..

For my styled portraits unit we used Re:So in The Marlands, Southampton as a test location for shoots. Here are a couple of the images I came out with.

Model: Lucy Bowen
Stylist: Sonia Nyange
Photographers: Sarah Roberts & Emma Savage

I was pretty happy with the results considering we were thrown into this task with no notice. It's interesting to see the different results gained with all the different people's inputs onto one theme.

Domestic Goddess

Seeing as the only decent (in my opinion) pasty shops in Southampton are at least a 40 minute walk away from my house I decided to take matters into my own hands and make my own!

I'd never attempted to make a pasty before today so the outcome was looking a bit bleak.

The recipe I followed (vaguely) can be found here.

As I'm not a big mustard fan I substituted the mustard powder for piri piri flakes and added some chives in for a little added extra.

Our pasties contained Potatoes, Red Onions, Chives, Salt, Pepper, Piri Piri flakes, Cheese (obviously) and Chorizo for the non-veggie.

I decided to leave the crimping part to my friend as I wanted the pasties to at least look decent if they didn't taste it.
We changed the recipe slightly and made 6 larger pasties instead of 12 small ones as we're all fatties in this house.

The finished article looked delish If I do say sos myself. I added a side of salad to make myself feel like I was eating healthily at least and surprisingly when it came down to eating the finished product, they tasted as good as they looked!

I'd totally recommend give pasties a go. They're a cheap and easy enough snack/meal to make and leave you feeling satisfied with your efforts come the end.

Sneak Peak

I was so happy with the new trainers I brought the other day I just had to do a short post about them.

These are my new beauties..

I've been after a pair of Nikes for AGES but being a student I'm on a penny saving diet. When I saw these in Office the other day in the SALE I knew it was fate. Yellow in particular mustard yellow is my favourite colour at the moment so when I saw these at a steal of a price of £30 down from £69.99 I could hardly say no could I??

Have you picked up any steals recently?

Marwell Wildlife Park

Today I went to one of my favourite places to go on a day out, the zoo. I find it such a great place to go and just spent hours and hours walking round having to think about nothing but the animals. Since I'd moved to Southampton I hadn't made the journey out of town yet to find the zoo but today was such a beautiful day positioned within a grim looking week I couldn't not take advantage of it.

We spent 3 hours walking round the zoo looking like tourists with our cameras stuck to our faces. The zoo makes me snap happy and I managed to take over 180 photos. I think the animals I enjoyed the most were the meerkats (obviously, everyone loves meerkats, but this little mite below was like the star of the meerkats. He loved to pose for photos and be centre of attention), the snow leopards (they were just beautiful and I spent at least 15 minutes standing, watching the mother and her 2 cubs they had) and the penguins (who were put unusually at the beginning of the zoo. They did a great job of getting you excited, swimming right up to the wall to come and say hi).

Marwell also has a beautiful house and garden which I was just as excited about seeing and the weather that we were lucky enough to have made the house look even more amazing.

The zoo is just a fantastic day out for people of all ages and I'm personally never going to get tired of going there.

New in:

And so, yet again I acted on impulse and brought myself a new duvet set today. Whilst doing my weekly shop, I came across this little beauty in ASDA! Truthfully, I had been looking for a duvet set for a while but when I saw this one it was perfect! It would go both with the vintage and pink aspects in my room and so I went ahead and brought it.

Duvet Set: ASDA, 'Clara Blueberry Duvet set', £12

With it being £12 and just amazing I couldn't not post about it and I can't wait to sleep in it tonight!
What kind of style have you gone for in your Uni or home rooms?

I also stopped off in H&M to grab a few essentials for a job interview I have coming up and on the way to the check out picked some nail varnish, as I'd never used their nail varnish before and I was to lazy to go to another shop to buy my usual I thought I'd give it a go.

Nail Polish: H&M, £2.99 (Concrete me)

I am actually really happy with the colour that you get from this nail varnish, I did end up applying two coats as I prefer the darker shades and so it wasn't too thin.

I'd definitely recommend giving their brand a go if you're after a cheap nail varnish, but make sure you leave time for it to dry as it's not as quick drying as the brands I'm used to.
